New! Grizzly Bears in Khutzeymateen
Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary, British Columbia, Canada - May 2024

In a remote location on the northernmost coast of Canada's British Columbia, there is an inlet known as Khutzeymateen. I went there in 2015 and finally I now had the chance to get back there! After flying in by floatplane from Prince Rupert, we lived onboard the delightful Afterglow, from which we ventured out on Zodiacs numerous times a day to look for Grizzly Bears. At this time of year the bears, recently out of hibernation, are feeding on grasses and sedges in the estuary here, and digging for clams on the shoreline. It is also the mating season. We saw at least 30 different bears during our 4-day stay. Visiting in May makes a great contrast to photographing bears salmon fishing, an activity that happens in the summer and early autumn.
An absolutely top notch trip booked directly with Jenn Broom, the owner of Ocean Light Adventures.
