Wrangel Island and the Russian Far East, on board Spirit of Enderby - July/August 2018
Led by Mark Carwardine, accompanied by Chris Breen, Joe Cornish and Rachel Ashton, this was a Wildlife Worldwide charter of Heritage Expeditions ship Spirit of Enderby. It took us to some of the most remote parts of the Russian Far East and Russian Arctic. We departed from the Port of Anadyr in Chukotka in Russia's Far East, and sailed east along the coast before turning north, where we passed through the Bering Strait between Chukotka, Russia and Alaska, USA. Entering Arctic waters, we headed to Wrangel Island, one of the world's foremost Polar Bear areas.
The wildlife did not disappoint. We saw over 20 Polar Bears, over 1000 Pacific Walruses, hundreds of whales and loads of birds - and seven Kamchatka Brown Bears and one Musk Ox!
The Polar Bears were undoubtedly the stars of the show, and we were lucky to have a number of excellent encounters, all very different to each other.
