New! Churchill, Canada - Polar Bears and Foxes

Churchill, Hudson Bay, Canada - November 2022

A Natures Images photo tour led by Danny Green to the small Arctic town of Churchill, on the coast of Canada's Hudson Bay. At this time of year the Polar Bears have been on land since the sea ice melted in late spring. Sea ice is essential for their survival, as they use it as a platform to hunt seals, their main prey. Every autumn near the shoreline at Churchill, they gather in large numbers waiting and waiting for the sea to freeze. Once that happens, within a few hours they are gone - off hunting once again after months without a substantial meal.
We were there for just six full days, on four of which we travelled out in Tundra Buggies to see Polar Bears - the bears this year were very actively sparring - usually young adult males, they pass the time whilst waiting by engaging in friendly sparring with other bears - fascinating to watch and photograph. Early cold weather put an end to sparring, when the sea froze after our second day on the Tundra Buggies, and the bears headed off onto the ice for a welcome meal. On the other two days we drove around the small local road network in 4x4 vehicles looking for wildlife - this year there were abundant foxes - mainly Red Foxes but also a few Arctic Foxes. Although the larger foxes are all the species Red Fox, they come here in a variety of colour morphs - Red, Silver, Black and Crossfox - we were lucky enough to see all types.
My thanks to the team at Natures Images and tour leader Danny Green for running a wonderful trip.
